5 Different Ways/Method To Store And Retrieve Facebook Chat Logs
Have you ever wanted to save an important information from your chat on Facebook ? Most of the time, we will forget to save the information and experience problem getting the information back. Some site claims that its not possible to retrieve the chats since Facebook doesn't stores the chat history. This is true, but we still can store the chat logs locally and retrieve when needed. In this post, I have compiled some of the tools that will help you to archive the chat logs.
Check out the tools/methods below:
- Notepad. This is probably one of the easiest way to store your message. You can just copy and paste the whole chat conversation into a blank notepad file and save it. However this method requires patience and a lot of manual work involved. Its easy to store the message but if you have large collection of archived chats, its very difficult to search and get information.
- Pixlr Grabber. This is a plugin for chrome where you can print screen any visible part of a web page. So if you are in the middle of chatting and would like to save important information. Just activate the following plugin and save the chat window as image file . This method is not suitable to store longs chats. I am not aware if there are any similar plugin available for other browsers.
- Fchat. (a.k.a. FCT) is a program that searches a computer hard drive for Facebook® chat messages or silently captures Facebook® chat as it occurs. An HTML report file is created containing the located/captured messages, sorting them by date and time. Unicode is supported (i.e. different languages) and converted to the original text. The free version can only retrieve limited number of chat logs. You can purchase licensed version for around USD 20/-.
- ScrapBoy. This is an offline facebook chat application. One needs to make installation on their desktop in order to user the applciation. This application comes with many interesting features. Check out the following video to know more about the tools.
- Firefox Facebook Chat Manager. Chat history manager is a Firefox extension which can save your Facebook chat messages in your local environment.You can view your chat history anytime either online or offline.Your messages are securely stored and only person passed the security check can view saved messages. This extension won't store your chat history on server.Installation and usages are pretty simple.

It’s not true that Facebook doesn’t store chat content history. They do.
How do I know?
On March 9 2011 I was using Facebook chat to talk to a friend. I refreshed the page after my connection dropped temporarily and our chat history from that evening disappeared. In its place random comments from our chats on February 16 2010, March 4, March 5, April 5, August 10, August 23, August 24, September 12, October 9, November 25 and December 6 2010 appeared, followed by our subsequent conversation from March 9 2011. This shows Facebook keeps logs of chat content going back over a year at least. (If they didn’t, it wouldn’t have been possible to reproduce this content.) And since I keep text file copies of my chats, I know those comments were made on the dates specified.
The fact that they do this, that they do this without declaring that they do this (particularly in view of the fact most users assume they don’t), and that they do this while withholding access to the content from the people who originated and therefore ‘own’ it is, I think, something they should be confronted with and asked to explain. At the very least.
